1570s by Lucas de Heere
European — mostly European — costume of the 1570s in drawings by Lucas de Heere, also known as Lucas d’Heere (1534–1584). The illustrations were made for the manuscript “Théâtre de tous les peuples et nations de la terre avec leurs habits et ornemens divers, tant anciens que modernes, diligemment depeints au naturel par Luc Dheere, peintre et sculpteur Gantois”. The cover used here separately comes from another manuscript by him, “Corte Beschryvinghe van Engheland, Schotland, ende Irland”.
De Heere’s costume book includes both historical dress and the clothing of his contemporaries from various countries and regions. Lucas de Heere was a Flemish painter and poet from Ghent. He worked in the Low Countries, France, and England, painted portraits and other works, produced designs for tapestries associated with commissions by Catherine de’ Medici, and made drawings of the dress of different peoples.
