The Flapper’s Leg Allure

In the 1910s, women’s skirts became shorter, and by the 1920s the sight of bare female legs no longer surprised anyone. At the turn of the 1910s and 1920s, flapper girls appeared — we wrote about them in a separate post. In fact, a film with that very title was released as early as 1920. Flappers were radical fashionistas. Attracting attention was essential to their style, and emphasizing their legs was typically flapper!

What were some of the ways they did this? One of the most common and innocent methods was to roll down their stockings. Special garters were sold specifically for holding stockings in place while allowing them to be rolled. Bare knees could be rouged or painted — we covered that in another post as well.

Women could also wear beautiful decorative garters that peeked out from under their skirts when they lifted them. Another option was to wear an anklet over the stockings. Some women didn’t wear stockings at all, instead painting patterns directly onto their legs to create the illusion of stockings. Others decorated their stockings with designs or even glued photographs onto them — or directly onto the skin before putting the stocking on.

There were countless creative and eye-catching ways to draw attention to the legs — but not simply bare legs! Throughout most of the 1920s, that was still considered improper. Even at the beach, it wasn’t always common to see women with uncovered legs.

На рубеже 1910-х и 1920-х годов появляются девушки-флапперы — о них мы рассказывали в отдельном посте. Во всяком случае, в 1919 году выходит уже фильм с таким названием. Флапперы — радикальные модницы. Привлекать к себе внимание — основа их образа. Делать акцент на ноги — это так по-флапперски!

Какие бывают способы? Например, один из самых распространённых и невинных — закатать чулки вниз. Продавались специальные резинки для фиксации чулок и закатывания. Свободные колени можно было румянить или раскрашивать — об этом у нас тоже был отдельный пост.

Можно было использовать красивые декоративные подвязки, которые виднелись из-под юбок, когда те приподнимались. Также поверх чулок можно было надеть браслет на щиколотку. Некоторые дамы и вовсе не носили чулок, создавая иллюзию рисунками на ногах. Другие расписывали чулки узорами или приклеивали фотографии поверх чулок или прямо на ногу, а сверху надевали чулок.

Существовало множество интересных и креативных способов привлечь внимание к ногам, но просто голые ноги — нет! Это почти на протяжении всех 1920-х считалось неприличным. Даже на пляже не всегда можно было встретить девушек с голыми ногами.
