Reticule

Reticule (fr. réticule; de. Pompadour; es. ridículo) – a small handbag on a long cord or ribbon, reminiscent of a small bag or basket. A reticule typically held a handkerchief, a purse, and various ladies’ trinkets.

The small handbag carried in the hand appeared in the 1790s due to changes in fashion and clothing styles. Before that, there were small bags, but they were usually wallets attached to the belt and hanging from it. In the 16th–18th centuries, women used hanging pockets that were hidden under loose skirts. We wrote a separate post about them. With the spread of tight-fitting dresses at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, there was no longer room for pockets, and handbags came into fashion. The name reticule comes from the French réticule, which in turn derives from the Latin reticulum, a diminutive of rete, meaning “net.” Sometimes the reticule was jokingly called ridicule (“ridiculous,” “absurd”), because of the play on words.

In the 1820s, more rigid forms of the reticule appeared, and in the 1830s it fell out of fashion, replaced by handbags or purses attached to a chatelaine. Reticules did not completely disappear but did not become popular again until the 1910s, when their second wave of fashion occurred.

Маленькая сумочка, которую носили в руке, появилась в 1790-х годах в связи с изменениями в моде и стиле одежды. До этого использовались небольшие сумки, но обычно это были кошельки, которые крепились к поясу и свисали с него. В XVI–XVIII веках дамы пользовались висячими карманами, которые прятали под свободными юбками. Об этом мы написали в отдельном посте. С распространением тонких, облегающих платьев в конце XVIII — начале XIX века места для карманов не осталось, и в моду вошли сумочки.

Название «ридикюль» произошло от французского réticule, которое, в свою очередь, восходит к латинскому reticulum — уменьшительному от rete («сеть»). Иногда ридикюль шутливо называли ridicule («нелепый», «смешной») из-за игры слов между созвучными французскими терминами réticule и ridicule.

В 1820-е годы появились ридикюли более жёстких форм. В 1830-е они вышли из моды, уступив место другим типам сумочек, которые носили в руках или крепили к поясу при помощи шатлена. Ридикюли не исчезли полностью, но оставались непопулярными до 1910-х годов, когда произошла их вторая модная волна.
